My speedo quit on my 1967 XKE. I've tested the instrument and the cable core, and they seem to be OK. Must be the angle drive. Does anybody know how to get at the angle drive? Is there an access panel from above? My local Jag mechanic says he has to take the exhaust system out. Is that true?

Re.: 1967 XKE Speedo Problem
First Sam this should be posted in the E type forum. But in a word get a new mechanic. It is not an easy job but there is an access plug on the side of the trans. tunnel to help.

SAm,
I'm going through this same problem. If you pull up the carpet and lining on the passenger side of the trans tunnel you should see a rubber bung about 4" diam. (If any PO had trouble with the angle drive there may be a hacked out section instead, which is apparently not uncommon on these cars. Mine was intact, however.) When you remove it you might be able to see the angle drive, and if you have very tiny hands with 10" long fingers you will be able to get in there, and maybe even remove it --but I doubt it! I agree with George though: get a new mechanic. Mine have told me they can get at it from underneath, and no need to remove the exhaust.(It's on the other side of the transmission, for goodness' sake!)
I'm planning to send my speedo to Margaret at MOMA in Albuquerque (505 766 6661) for cleaning and recalibration. She also wants me to send the new cable (mine broke 7" from the trans end!) and the angle drive so she can test and adjust the entire assembly before it is re-installed. In her experience, the angle drive rarely fails, and if necessary, she can rebuild it. (She used to work for Smiths, and has 30 years' experience. Talking with her you just know she is one of the good ones, and several friends with E-Types have spoken highly of her work.)
Hope this helps,
