Yesterday was the first nice day we have had in quite a while, so I decided to charge the battery in the Jag and take it out for the years first drive. When I hooked up the charger a klaxon horn started to sound and the onkly way to make it stop was to remove the battery lead. I removed the neg and gave the battery a full charge, however now anytime I reconnect the neg lead this super loud horn goes off and a red LED on the steering column keeps blinking. It blinks in sets of 3 blinks then it goes off for a few seconds. I am told that there is a back-up battery and a valet switch, I can't find either. This system has also disabled the ignition, therefore the car won't start. I do not nor have I ever had a remote key fob for this car. The only keys are the ignition and the trunk door, etc. key.Is there a way to turn this off, disable, or a work around that I can use to get this problem solved. Don't even know where to start and I would appreciate any help that I can get. Bob K 1990 XJS conv

My car does the same thing, but the alarm goes off after a few seconds. It was stressful the first time it happened, but doesn't seem to harm anything. I connect the positve charger cable to the positive battery post and the negative to the 1/4"dia trunk latch bar at the bottom center of the trunk opening. I do not remove the negative battery lead.

I have a toggle switch tucked away on the underside of the steering column, I was told this is the on/off switch for the alarm. Have you tried turning that off?

Thanks, however I dont have a remote key fob. I have tried locking and unlocking drivers door, turning ignition on and off without starting car, checking all obvious switches, still LED continues to flash and alarm sounds. I would just disable alarm horn, but the ignition is still disabled. So no start. I have a wiring diagram of 1990 Security system that shows a back up battery and valet switch. It also shows a start inhibit relay. It does not give a location or numeric designation so I can't find them on Jag wiring diagram.Maybe I'll just turn it into a planter. Thanks for all your help. Same thing happened to me, I got rid of it by pressing the remote button a number of times. But it does raise an interesting point as the blips and tones emmitted when you press the remote are a mystery to me.
Anyone know what the sequence/logic is?

On my 94, turning the key on and off 4-5 times, without starting the engine, turns off the alarm. I don't know if it resets by itself when turned off.

Robert,
I remember reading about shutting off the alarm system manually on my 1995 XJS. I will try to find the answer for you tonight and let you know.
