Georges suggestion of the reinforcement from Coventry West is your answer. Since I have it, here is a picture of what happens. The door metal fractures and in some cases gets severely bent out of shape. That plate and some big washers can be used with bolts to flatten the metal back into the proper shape, then a new check arm installed with the plate to reinforce it. All better!
