The speedometer come and goes. I can go days and days with no problem. Then it can come and go three or four times in an hour or less. I assume it is electric, could it be a corroded connection? If so where should I start looking? When I start the engine, the speedo needle always comes off of the peg, but it may not work when the car is in motion. The problem may be worse in cold weather, but it could be my imagination. I have had several shops look for the problem with no luck. The Check Engine light is on also. I am told that the cause is a failed low fuel sending unit in the fuel tank, could that effect the speedo? Sure could use some help. Thanks.

Just a note, use up as much fuel as you can in that tank as it will be easier for the mechanic. It is also a good time to remove the drain plug and clean/replace the filter. John, I see no need for such polite formality ( Wall Street Journal style) on this site, I answer to Bill.

Thank you Mr. Brady. I will replace the low fuel sending unit as soon as I find a shop I am comfortable with. I will order a speedo transducer and get it replaced. Thanks again. John

David your problem is a little simpler. It is most likely the speedo transducer which is located on the left side of the transmission. Your (non OBD) car has no Computer modules the feed is hard wired to the speedo. As for the fuel senders they have no low fuel warning circut,

There is no connection between the Sender the speedo and the check Engine light. The speedo is operated by a transducer on the casing, the the most likely cause is a bad/loose connection or a faulty transducer. Why don't you fix the sender unit anyway?
Retraction! disregard my note, I was thinking you had the series III XJ. Unfortunately your car does not have a drain plug! Although, it is still advisable to use up as much fuel as possible before replacing the sender
