I have a 1993 XJS Convertible with the 4.0 engine. It is completely stock with 83K miles on it. I would like to give it a little more "growl" in the exhaust note, which is pretty close to completely silent. I am not after an annoying sound like straight pipes, just a little growl. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to do this?

Last night I spent about 2 hours trying to get the 2 rear mufflers off, to no avail. Getting the clamp off was easy, but even with an air-powered chisel, I never got either one to turn loose. I left it soaking with a liberal application of PB Blaster. I will squirt it again this evening and give it a go again this weekend. I might have to resort to a torch.

I like the idea of seeing what it sounds like and then possibly adding Ansa or Borla tips. That would look great as well.

I will let you know what I end up with, assuming the darn mufflers let go of the pipes they are on.

Actually the source that I noted above only has systems for the V12. I had a shop build my system, used 2.5" pipe, put a high flow cat on each side after the header, replaced the original mufflers with 11" MagnaFlos, and used Ansa tips to tone it all down a bit. Works great and cost about $800. Steven's idea is good also. If too much bark, put some Ansa or Borla tips on. ;-)

One of my friends and fellow Club members has a 1994 6 Cyl. that has the two rear silencers removed. They were gone when he acquired the car. That gives the car a definite 'sports car' sound. It's not necessarily pleasing to me, but he loves it! [as do some of my coworkers] His car also happens to be one of the rare manual trans cars, too.
