Can someone advise the proper procedure for removing the starter from subject car? I recenly had the complete intake set up including manifolds off of the car and could not figure out how to get to the starter securing bolts to remove the starter. The starter has now failed and I am faced wit the task of removing it. I did not have the vacuume tank off which the manual says to pull in order to remove the starter. Could someone please advise me on this. The car is right hand drive.

When reinstalling starter use allen headed bolts!!! This way the starter can be easily removed in the future without pulling intake. Especially easy if you have air powered air ratchet. This way you don't have to get under car with long extensions & u-joint socket. Hope this helps other E-Type owners. Wolfgang

Tom:

I've done this at least 3 times on my Dec. 1963 E-type FHC.

DO NOT CUT ANY SHEET METAL.

You can reach the top nut and bolt fairly easily with box-end wrenches. The lower nut and bolt can be reached with a box-end wrench on the nut (the transmission side), and a socket with a a long (or two) extension, such that the ratchet is just beyond the end of the starter. The box-end wrench has to be lodged against the transmission or transmission tunnel, depending on whether you are loosening, or tightening.

The nut holding the power cable is 1/4" Whitworth, I think, just off from any British Imperial, or metric sized wrenches. I use a small crescent wrench for it.

Put a towel (a couple layers of it) over the oil pressure sender to keep from bending the leads, and remove the distributor (mark the positions well, or set the timing up again afterwards). Remove the starter out below the intake manifold ( it's heavier than it looks), and up through the hole between the engine block and frame rails where the distributor had been. Nothing else has be removed, or even touched.

Tom, The starter is a bit-ch to remove on the 3.8 cars but it can be done. The upper bolt is easy as it can be undone from the engine side and the lower nut and be reached with a long extension and a u joint. Coming out is the easy part, the hard part, besides the fact that it's heavy, is getting the lock washer and nut on the lower bolt. It can be done and the higher the car is off of the ground the better.

I believe you have to remove the enging or cut a hole in the tranny tunnel to get at the bolts. You might want to check on the Jag-Lovers forum and search the archives as there have been many discussions on this subject.
