what is the best way to replace a leaky rear transmission seal in my car. It is on my lift, I have the exhaust off, rear support off with the transmission supported, and the spedo cable removed including set screw for spedo drive. I am questioning weather I will have the room to get the end section out without moving the rear carridge or engine?

Re.: 69 e type rear tranny seal
Anti-roll bar is what we call the Sway Bar in Europe...and what Jag probably call it in their manual.

Re.: 69 e type rear tranny seal
Hi Bill,
Thanks for the advice on the tranny seal project. After studying the situation, I removed the anti-roll bar and that gave enough room for the driveshaft to be moved back out of the way and then I was able to remove the tail section of the transmission without any problem! Now I know how to fix a rear transmission seal!

Re.: 69 e type rear tranny seal
Hi Bill,
Yes it is leaking on to the Mufflers and needs to be addressed. What does the fluid level have to do with it-are you thinking it could be over full? If so, maybe I should check it, but the maintenance records for the last 15 years don't show any service to the tranny.

Hello. first, is the leak that bad? and have you checked the oil level? There is not enough space to get the flange off with the diff in place. It is much easier to remove the rear suspension assembly. but it depends on many things. If the rear end has never been out, it is a good time to service it. ie; reseal the output shafts, callipers and the diff front seal. And maybe even rotors, springs and shocks. If there is engine/clutch/gearbox work to be done, then perhaps now is the time to do it!

69 e type rear tranny seal
Hi Bill,
It is a 69 OTS. What is the best way to do this job-should I drop the rear out or lower the engine, or is there enough room if I disconnect the driveshaft at the rear and move it to the side?
Thanks,
Bob

69 e type rear tranny seal
If it's a 2 + 2 it is a struggle. If a OTS or FHC it's impossible.
We call it a sway bar here in the states as well. However it seems to be refered to as a anti-roll bar in SNG Barratt's parts book! Who would think that Barratt was politically incorrect! Maybe they got that term from a "JagUare" parts book? Anyway the job is done-no saws-all, no hammer & chissel, just another time consuming Jaguar E-tpe (XKE here in the States) job.
With good Humor,
Bob
