It's my understanding the clock is battery powered. However, on my car there is no battery or battery holder on the back of the clock. Were some clocks powered by the car battery?

70 E-type FHC clock
Dennis this post and the previous one stress the need for a workshop manual. They are available in the JCNA shoppe. Your car most like is after the change that powered the clock off of the car battery and no longer from a cell battery.
Hi Dennis,
In January 1968 Jaguar introduced the mercury cell powered clock, the CET3201. Later, in October 1969 they replaced it with a clock that was powered from the car's battery, the CTE3107. If you look above the number 12 you will see one of those numbers, and to remove all doubt the later clock also has the words "12V NEG. EARTH". There was also originally a sticker on the side of the clock proclaiming that in 4 languages. Depending on when your car was originally titled it could have had either clock. I have received many mercury-powered clocks from cars that were registered as 1970 models, even though the car was obviously manufactured in 1969.
