I have now replaced the cam cover gasket for the third time and hoping it is now O.K. First two attempts resulted in immediate splitting of the gasket even though the correct torque was applied to all the screws and workshop procedures followed.Any ideas about what went wrong?

Try using the factory gaskets. They are made of an aluminum stamping with bonded rubber on each side. The paper ones are very prone to spliting, especially around the front of the head.
Thanks for the tip,I had not heard about Permatex. If my third one fails be sure I'll try Permatex.
