I had this problem with my '71. The ignition system was all new, so I spent hours trying to find a problem with the fuel system. No luck. I finally tried another coil and the problem disappeared! the coil I replaced tested OK, just didn't work.

You might check the iginiton switch and fuses too. A few years ago the ignition switch on my '68 (with series II type dash and tach) fried and in the process melted the inductive wire loop that runs thru the tach. I wonder if the tach jump you have might trace back to an ignition switch problem ?? I have also had fuses that are not blown but have come loose at one of the end caps and goes intermittant instead of being blown in the middle and easy to spot. On the '68's at least there is a lot of high amp draw items and the tach runiing thru one fuse that I remeber getting quite hot until I installed Cool Cat fans which draw less current than the originals did.

Jeffery,

If your e type is a 1965, it's a Series 1. The Series 1's were made from 1961 through 1967. The 1968 e type is considered a Series 1.5. The the Series 2 started in 1969 through 1971. All Series 1, 1.5, and 2 are 6 cylinder engines. The Series 3 started in 1971 to 1974 and are 12 cylinder cars for the most part (it's beleaved there were six 6 cylinder Series 3 made). Hopefully this will help

I was in the same boat trying to figure out a similar problem. My 65 XKE would run great until I slowed down to make a turn and the car would shut down. also when the engine was hot and I'd turn it off, had to wait 30 minutes to restart. Tried new plug wires replaced the carb. diaphrams, replaced the fuel pump, nothing changed. When I replaced distributer with an electronic one and replaced the strarter with a new version the problem went away. It was unbelievable I hardly push the starter button and it starts and I don't have the engine shuting down.

On another note, how can I tell what series my car is?
