Installed my Series 1 engine on the advice of another member. Made a wooden frame to lift the front end of the car. Engine stayed on the ground and only had to lift it fit engine mounts. Could not have been easier!

Thanks John for the tip regarding the torsion bar removal. I just got to one of the 4 9/16 nuts; the lower one next to the clutch slave. Car is on jacks but I guess there is still lethal force still loaded within the two long torsion bars. I have the head off; took two weeks to get the head above the frozen head studs ! Plan is to remove the short block+trans from the top. Block has two frozen in bores' pistons. Only serious rust is drivers' floor.

Be careful with the torsion bars. I tried it by the maintenance manual and I am still lucky to have fingers. Loosen the ball joints and they will relieve the pressure on the torsion bar.

Make sure the down pipes are off first. The lower nuts are a pain to get at but doable with time and either a box end or open end at times. Use a 'Liquid Wrench' type product.
The torsin bars and reaction plate have to be removed in all cases. I have been told you can then remove the picture frame and bring the engine out from the front. I removed mine from the bottom and it was easy (engine and auto transmission together).
Good luck, Joel.

I'm pulling the engine from my EType. I would like to go the bottom route but I can't get the exhaust manifolds off! So I guess I have to pull it from the top.
I think I have a handle on everything except this part:
"Undo and remove the bolts on each side holding the torsion bar reaction plate. You will need a helping hand for this operation. Remove reaction tie plate and cover"
Can anyone walk me through this?
I am considering another option. I'm thinking of unbolting the sub-frames from the firewall! I'm rebuilding the car using another tub so I have to take them off anyway. Has anyone done this?
I'm still going to be dealing with the torsion bar system, so I could use some guidance!
Thanks,
Tom
