Does anyone out there know how to disconnect the ****ing VCM? I have two early XJ40s, and they both insist that the ABS has failed, coolant is low, brake pressure low etc etc...
Ideally I'd like to retain the digital read out at the bottom of the display, used by the trip computer, and simply kill the flashing symbols. Can it be done?

Well, sloved, but rather inelegantly.
Remove the instrument pod (4 screws), dismantle the pod until you have uncovered the bare instrument faces (easy, as it all unclips) then prise out the tinted plastic screen covering the VCM monitor. Tape the monitor over with black insulation tape, twice, or you will see a slight glow at night.
Crude, but much less annoying. Warnings are still show on the trip computer read out below, but you can cancel them. No more night driving distraction.
For the record, I did try to unplug the VCM whilst leaving everything else functioning, but without success. The circuit boards seem very complicated to my untrained eye, and the 'obvious' multi-pin connector kills all the digital instruments.
