Can anyone suggest what is best to lube hoses for putting onto fittings and pipes? I've tried it all: WD-40, well-bearing grease, lithium grease, Vaseline. They all enable the hose to go on smoothly, however, a year later, the hose is welded to the pipe and I end up having to slit the hose to get off. Any suggestions?

Use DOT 5 that was expelled during bleeding. Works great on all rubber inc. tires or tyres and will not bed or build up. Cheap too unless you remember what it cost going in.

Patrick: I too have tried a variety of substances over the years, inc. WD40, silicone spray and Vaseline. A high quality silicone spray seemed to protect the rubber and eased later removal. I also use it to detail hoses and other rubber fittings, also weather stripping. Also works pretty well for delaying build-up on battery terminals.

When I put a new fuel hose on my car last year (from the filter to the carbs) I used dishwashing liquid; went on as easy as pie. Haven't tried to remove it -- don't expect to for at least 20 years! -- but I can't see why it would weld the hose to the fitting.
