I am having some trouble with the ignition in my '79 XJ6... The key will not stay in the "start" position, it slips to the "igniton" position, turnig the engine off. The car will run fine, as long as I am holding the key in place. I assume this problem is caused by the unit that is locked to the steering column(I don't know the exact term for this unit), not the ignition switch itself. Does anybody have any advice on how to fix this? I would really appreciate any suggestions.

I had a similar problem with one of my MGB's. A boss wore off the steering wheel lock mechanism. If the units are similar it is easy to get the locking mechanism apart - take a sharp punch and tapping hammer and tap the tamper proof bolts loose - a little pentrating oil helps and gentle taps will soon loosen the bolts so you can remove them by hand. Tip - loosen all bolts equally so they don't bind. Once the mechanism is removed study it for a worn or missing boss or replace the mechanism using regular bolts. Try a dismantler for a used part if the boss can't be replaced.
