bob,jx.s 1988----i can not get the top to seal down,leaves a gap of about 1/2 inch,took to a local mechanic,who was stumped also.any ideas of what i am missing or doing wrong? i just bought this vehicle

OK it is a Hess (I have one and have loved it for years). Looking at the repair manual make sure you are not binding the top on a window etc. If that is ok check that the adjustment on the J hooks is taken up (make shorter). Failing at that (and if it is in a bind) take the hydro system off line by turning the valve by the pump. If you need parts there is a top company in FLA. that bought up all stock. Not mentioned in the manual check that your hoodsticks are not binding. Good luck. George Camp

Bob first things first---is the car a Hess and Eisenhart? If so there should be a badge on each rear corner of the front wings that says so. If it is I think I can help you. If it is a "chop" job by others good luck. George Camp

Your 88 has an H&E top so my experience with my 91 OEM Jag top may not help.

When my top would not close enough to latch it, I found the hydraulic system was low on oil. I added fluid and the top closes fully now.
