Mystery. For years i have had ohe back carb on the driver side use up, suck up ??? the oil in the damper pot. resulting in having to fill the piston rod just about every time you take the car out. THE OTHER 3 CARBS ARE FINE.ANYONE WHO CAN SOLVE THIS MYSTERY? BY THE WAY I HAVE REBUILT THE CARB
SOME TIME AGO. BESIDES THE DASH POT IS A CLOSED COLUMN OF OIL.

Pat,

You are losing the damper oil because the O-ring around the needle in the piston is leaking. Although the Jaguar book says you can't replace that O-ring, you can. Basically, you remove the piston from the carb, remove the diaphram from the piston, remove the needle from the piston, and then push the adjuster/O-ring assembly out from the bottom where the needle was. The easiest way to do it is put it in a drill press and used an upside down drill bit to press it out. Be sure to catch the pieces. Once you've replaced the O-ring, put the adjuster back in the tube with the lock spring on top of it, flanges up, and press the assembly back in with the upside down drill bit.

I did this on all the pistons on my former '72 E-type and it solved the "lost oil" problem. And remember, you don't fill the carb with oil to the top... only to about a 1/4" below the top of the INNER tube (i.e., the tube in the piston, not in the dome.).
