David, Its not so much the top speed, its the breathing of the engine. With Triple su's the car runs smoother, wider power band, coolers and just overall performs better. That same Stromberg set up in my 1972 xj6, needed valve jobs every 30,000 miles as carbon build up was the worst. The center valves would load up and the outer cylinders would be so lean. Add the vacuum RETARD distributor and a vacuum line running from the BOTTOM of the manifold where the gas would sit, was really not a great combo. As a matter of fact, many went up in flames.
How many people cut out the butterfly traps. Then all the air leaks, it was a real bad design.
One trip with triples and that wonderful hum and its all over......
