I have a 1986 XJ6 and am unable to switch to the right side gas tank. I was told by the previous owner that all I need to do is replace the switch over valve. He included the part. He said that it is as simple as going into the trunk and disconnecting the fuel line on both sides of the valve, and putting in the replacement. Can it be that simple? Any thoughts? Thank you.

Re.: Switching between gas tanks
I suspect a problem with the return valves or their operating circuit, which shared with the changeover valve.
When you say "fuel spills out"....from where is it spilling?

Richard: Be sure that you haven't put the switch in backward or that the pump is installed backward and the pump is pulling fuel from the tank and pouring it out the overflow instead of going to the filter and on to the engine.

Re.: Switching between gas tanks
I replaced the fuel tank switch over valve. It was a simple swop. The only challenge is keeping the gas from flowing out of the tubes when removed. Unfortunately, that did not solve the problem. What happens is when switched to the right tank, fuel spills out.

Re.: Switching between gas tanks
Yes, that simple, except there are two wires attached also, so look at them and attach the same way. I'm assuming that since the previous owner had the part, he checked to see if that was indeed the problem, and not the actural switch on the dash. Change the valve, since you have it, keeping the old until your sure, and see what happens. If you don't know where the change over valve is, it is in the truck, at the rear, just in front of the trunk latch area. Remove the spare tire to see it. Good luck. Keith.

Switching between gas tanks
Sorry, I forgot to state the model. It is a 1986 XJ6.

While the car was in for other service, the mechanic hooked up the ground wire correctly and the fuel tanks switch properly. Thanks for all of the response.
