I HAVE DECIDED THAT MY NEXT PURCHASE WILL BE EITHER THE X OR S MODEL.I AM NOT A BRAND SPECIFIC BUYER.I HAVE HAD MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF CARS DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF COMMUTING AT THE TIME. NOWADAYS I DO LESS COMMUTING. I WOULD CONSIDER MYSELF SOMEONE THAT PREFERS THE STABILITY OF A SPORTS CAR FEEL(REAR WHEEL DRIVE)THOUGH I LOVE THE PLUSHNESS OF A LUXURY CAR INTERIOR.PERFECT CANDIDATE FOR SPORT SEDAN RIGHT? ESPECIALLY NOW THAT I AM GETTING TO THIS AGE (YOUNG 40)...END OF THE BABY BOOMERS :-) AND WANTING A LITTLE MORE COMFORT. I HAVE A 10 YEAR OLD SON. SO SAFETY IS AN ISSUE. LOOKED AT VOLVOS...LOVED THE CARS (EVEN THEY COULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MORE PLUSH ON THE INTERIOR)HATED THE TORQUE STEER AND TURNING RADIUS.LIVED IN EUROPE YEARS AGO SO AUTOBAHN DRIVING NOT A PROBLEM. MOST RECENTLY MOVED FROM FLORIDA TO MARYLAND SO.... HERE WE AGO AGAIN WITH ICE AND RAIN.

I AM BUYING THIS CAR TO DRIVE NOT TO JUST SIT PRETTY IN THE GARAGE.

I WOULD APPRCIATE ANY RECCOMENDATIONS FROM X AND S OWNERS.

* PERFORMANCE
* HORSEPOWER (ENOUGH OR NOT?)
* NOTICABLE DIFERENCE IN SPORT PACKAGE(MANUAL OR NOT?)

I may be late on the reply, as I just joined the San Diego
Jaguar Club today.So if you have not already made a decision,here is my take:
I would look at the X-type for the all wheel drive handling and
safety,especially in rain.
Here in So.California,being able to "get out of the way" quickly
in heavy,fast traffic is a real key for me.(But I drive a lot for business.)
The dealer told me the front brakes weat out quickly and they just
handed me a bill for replacing them.
Overall comfort and features for are excellent, in my opinion.

Hi Johnothan, welcome to the Jaguar Club of North America. Congratulations on the purchase of the S Type, one of our associate members has one of these cars, he appears to enjoy it greatly, it certainly looks great.
My first Jaguar was also an S although an XJS, S was supposed to stand for Special as the car was quite different from previous Jaguars. Many of the first bodies were apparently built by Aston Martin , who apparently also had some kind of design work in the planning of the car.
The XJS was the longest running production Jaguar to date , I believe with just over twenty years of production. Through the early years when gas prices became a problem, early cars liked the gas greatly, but performance was pretty high also. Next came the High Efficiency models with higher gearing to save on gas, and they did with in the low to mid twenties miles per gallon. Then came the six cylinders, better still on gas , but still quite quick, also in the latter years came the enlarged V12 with a mighty 6.0 LIters and over three hundred horses to boot.
Of course the new S Types are more current with all the latest ideas on saving fuel, and looking great. The X Types are also a well enjoyed car by several people that I know.

I have just purchased a very low mileage "previously enjoyed" 3.0 litre 2001 S type with almost no extras and it is quite the nicest car I have ever driven, whilst still being small enough to drive and park around the city. Power is more than adequate for normal driving and the gas consumption isn't too bad. I have just fitted Michelin Pilot winter tyres so I am confident they will get me through the Alberta Winter. The traction control should be sufficient (this is based on my prior winter experience with a Grand Marquis which ploughed through any sort of snow conditions without any problems). I looked at the X-type but thought it was a bit cramped in the back - the X-type Station wagon overcomes that problem, but these are not yet on the "previously enjoyed" car market.

I had the same thought as Daniel -- It would take a book to answer all your questions.

Ultimately, it's a personal preference between the two. Obviously, the X has the advantage of being all wheel drive. But the S is a somewhat bigger, roomier car. In either case, I'd opt for the larger engine if driving and horsepower is an issue for you. I believe both offer a sports package that stiffens handling, makes driving somewhat crisper.

In the end, which one do you like better? We can't tell you that. As Daniel suggests, go drive them, in their different configurations with the different engines. What you buy will be based on what YOU like, not what we like, and what your needs are. The new Jags have been enjoying top ratings from JD Powers on customer satisfaction and reliability, so in either case, that's not an issue.

And, BTW, Maryland is not so far north that you seriously have to worry about winter driving. Daniel is in Montreal. Weather is an issue there. I'm in North Jersey, and weather is somewhat of an issue. But Maryland... for the couple of snow/ice days you get a year, IMHO, it's not an issue.
