Tyson , I see your a newbie, let me explain about the 3.08 rear, so you save months of guessing.
You can just swap out the ring gear, most will be fine.
But a long run, cheaper option with LESS headaches is swapping to a later XJS COMPLETE PUMPKIN.
It bolts right in, the yoke sleeves are stainless sleeved and peened , all gaskets are modern, most if not all have a posi rear AND the rear cover has a vent tube for heat build up.
So when you are running through wine country like me in My Etype, the pumpkin does not get as hot and your inboard brake don't start moaning when all gets heated up........
Call Welsch,coventry they are very aware of the swap. One last thing the units on average are 25 years newer as well.
Keep the 4 speed for now and enjoy puttering around b roads at 35 miles per hour in 4th gear at 900 rpm, you think you driving an electric car. Downshift and blip the peddle and your doing 70.......WONDERFUL change.
