Like many people, I have removed the extra manifold butterflies on my 68 and have a couple of observations/questions. First, the car seems hyper sensitive to vacuum leaks and I am wondering if that is connected to the design of the Stromberg carbs. Any thoughts, anyone? Second, the engine runs much better with the spark advanced from the specified 5 degrees btdc (static) to 8. No pinging even with 93 octane gas. I am planning to try 10 degrees, the pre smog control setting. Once again, any input would be appreciated.

series 1.5 smog contols and timing
Bill I also removed mine long ago and does run much better without them for me. I left the cross-over pipe intact. I did have a vacuum leak at that gasket where the crossover pipe mates to the top of the rear exhaust manifold but otherwise have not had vacuum leak problems. I have had more problems with leaking floats causing it to run bad.
I have not played around with the timing but may try bumping it up some now.

David,
Thanks for your feedback. So far, there has been no mention of excessive vacuum leak problems from anyone. Think I need to look for some other issue. FYI, I blocked the crossover pipe with an aluminum plate planning ahead to replace the exhaust manifolds and installing a triple carb intake manifold. Also, I am not sure if it is a good idea to leave a resonant volume connected to the intake plumbing.
Let you know the results of setting the advance at 10 degree, probably next week.
