My starter just went out, and after many gymnastics, removed it. I am thinking about installing the "gear reduction" starter as advertised in XK's Unlimited and Welsh's catalogs.

Has anyone had experience with these starters?

Preston, I installed a gear drive and couldn't be more satisfied. The original always took longer to fire the engine and had a "ringy dingy" sound in so doing. The gear drive sounds stronger and fires the engine faster. Got mine from Welsh 3-4 years ago.

The original has a "hooded" covering for the gear, the photos of the newer style, do not. Any concern?
