I am shopping for new tires for an 89 XJ-S project car. Now, when I bought tires for my other 89 XJ-S, I got 235-60-15's. Everywhere "Jag" related states that is the proper size, and since I do the occasional concours, I want them to be correct. So far they have passed the muster.
Now, whenever I contact a tire shop or check online, whenever I enter "89 Jaguar XJ-S" the correct tire size listed is either 215-60-15 or 215-70-15. What's up with this and why are 235's never listed? Just curious, and getting tired of arguing with shop owners over the "correct" tire for my cars.

Tire size discrepency
I have been shopping for tires today for my 1991 XJS V12 convertible. The correct tire size is 235/60VR/15. However, I am having a hell of a time finding it.

Tire size discrepency
Tom, I suspect the "tire size data base" is shared throughut the industry so the same mistake keeps cropping up. And, with Jag tires being a relatively low-volume thing, I guess nobody is in a big hurry to correct it.
Or, thinking along cynical lines, the 235/60x15 size is getting a bit hard to come by, as you know, especially in the "proper" V-rating. Perhaps, then, the "error" is an attempt to steer you to a readily available alternative.
The 215/70 was standard fit for many years on the HE models (205/70 on pre-HEs). When the lattice wheels came along the 235/60 became virtually, perhaps literally, standard issue. Until, that is, the facelift models came along and things starting getting sorta compliated as far as tire offerings go.
I use 225/60s and am happy enough. You'll find many more choices out there for the 225/60s versus the 235/60s.

I just purchased 4 235/60 WR15 for an 89 XJS from the TireRack. These are the Pirelli P600 tires. I am pleased with their performance.
