Hi Guys

I am relatively new to this and in the UK but you all seem to have the forums cracked in the NA.

I have just bought a restored V12 and the only problem appears to be a whining power steering. Any clues to fixing this would be great, it only whines when pressure is applied to the steering and sounds pump related. Should I be lubricating something or tightening a belt

Thanks

Shaun

Shaun,

Sometimes that whining is belt related. Check the tension. Make sure it's not too tight or too loose. Also, check the fluid level. Make sure it is topped up properly with correct power steering fluid only. Then "bleed" the system by starting the engine and turning the steering wheel all the way to one side until you hit the lock, hold it there for 5 to 10 seconds, then turn the wheel all the way to the other side until it locks, and hold it there. Repeat that about 2 or 3 times and see if that clears it up. That will get all the air out of the system.

If you do all those things and it is still doing it, you should check with the restorer and find out if the pump was rebuilt or replaced. It may still be under warranty, depending on when it was done. Otherwise, have an experienced mechanic take a look at it. You may need to have the pump rebuilt.
