I've posted a moderately technical question about the "right" vinyl top for a couple of '75 XJ6 coupes I'm working on. It's posted in the Concours & Originality forum, but I'm hoping that maybe other XJ6 owners might pop over there and have a look.
Pascal: Have a violated a commandment with this sort of cross-referencing/cross-posting?
All: Now reading another post in this forum, I'm thinking maybe this is a question I should have taken to JagLovers instead. (But that site sort of intimidates me.) So, if I've I "posted amiss," I do apologize.

vinyl top
The top on my XJ6C was, and remains original as Jaguar made it. As far as I know all XJC cars (other than prototypes that never escaped the factory) came with black vinyl tops. As Stew may recall, my XJ6C is a good, unrestored car that was originally sold in southern Oregon. I purchased it in California and then brought it back up to the Pacific Northwest. It was at the Portland ABFM that I met the original owner. She walked around it several times and then said to me: "You've got my car!"

Re.: vinyl top on an XJ6coupe
oh yes you have, I guess we'll have to sentence you to some sort community service, like writing an article for the website on your first year experience on the Concours trail... :-)
seriously... I think the question belongs more in the model specific forum than the general concours forum... although the Concours/originality name may be a bit misleading...
Although there is more traffic on Jag Lovers, you'll find some of the same names over there so nothing to be intimidated about.

Lisa, with the red top on:
Steve Averill probably restored his vinyl top or had it restored. Steve's moved to Texas and I haven't been able to reach him via e-mail since he's moved. Does anybody know how to reach him? I'd ask his advice first. The red top would probably look stunning, but would fade fast in the sun - not to mention the hit you'd take in concours judging, if that's important. The existing black top, even badly deteriorated, would aid anyone who'd replace the missing one, so I'd have the missing one done first, then use it as the "pattern" when replacing the original black top. This isn't rocket science, but experience counts even on simple stuff. Most auto upholstery shops that can do convertable tops often have experience replacing vinyl tops - check the yellow pages and visit a few shops - the good ones always have scrap books full of pictures of their work. Longetivety in business is a very good sign, as it doesn't take much to start one of these shops. Make sure they know originality is important, otherwise they have a tendancy to do it their way, rather than the original way - a problem even with the best shops. Isn't the H & K shop, the outfit Jaguar authorized to convert the XJS coupes into convertibles, located in St. Lewis?
