Bob super!!!!! Bob are you in JCNA? If not why not join--think of it this way--we just saved you at least 3 times what a JCNA membership would have cost if you took the car to a shop! If already a member how about editing your profile so we know where you are--have a happy New Year!

Bob you have to take off the "ski slope" or the covering to the center but you do not have to take off the entire center console.

Yes, sorry for the confusion, it is at the front left of the gear lever, there are two micro switches together, the other is for the reverse lights.

Doug that is the way I read it--but I think it is on the front of the selector--2 micro switches--right?

William, it dawns on me that when you said "....on the left side of the gearbox" that perhaps you meant left side of the gearshift (??)
Cheers

William, no, not on the side of the trans, not on a XJS V12 with the TH400 trans. Perhaps you're thinking of a Ser III Xj6 with the BW66 trans?
The safety switch in thise case is at the gearshift quardrant.
Cheers

Bob William is right and spilt coffee usually does the trick. If your car will not start in neutral either then suspect the starter relay (RH side of the engine bay toward the cabin under a black plastic cover). Also check the red/ white starter sol wire at the connection in the middle of the engine at the rear for crud--just follow the wire from the relay and you will find it! Good luck.

It isn't a relay Bob it is a switch on the left side of the gearbox. Hold the ignition switch in the start position and apply the brakes, now move the gearlever through the range and see if there is a position where it starts, if yes the switch needs adjustment, if not, the switch is likely bad.
JCNA is a good organization to belong to, does not cost a lot but offers a lot in return.......I joined a local affiliate soon after I bought my Silver XJS GT ................... That was 20 years ago or more.......... we bought thew car when our son Chase was 1 year old.......... he has been with me to many JCNA events and now has his own X Type which he has shown and slalom raced at many JCNA events on the West Coast... Has also won a few North American Championships in doing so... and basically kept him out of trouble............ and thats not easy these days..........
