I am looking at a out-of-town for sale by owner '95 XJS Coupe in immaculate condition inside and out. Complete service history. However, there is a timing problem. Engine was rebuilt at 80,000 miles and now is at 143,000. When set to the proper mark, it runs briefly and dies, a recheck of the timing set shows it to be off by a quarter turn. It has been set and reset, but will not hold the proper setting. No known timing chain issue. Also has a new distributor. So, in speaking with my mechanics the "top of head" thoughts include the timing tensioner, a "balance wheel" near the tensioner all the way to a blown engine. I would appreciate input. Everyone I speak with is somewhat baffled by the problem. The current owner says a Jaguar mechanic near him spent a couple hours on the car and decided they would have to tear into engine area. I would like to buy the car, but do not want a major expensive project.

Thanks,

Scott

UPDATE

After speaking with a Jaguar specialist today, it seems that this problem will cost more to repair than the car is worth. Too bad. Must be a MAJOR job.

Scott I have seen this--you can return it to time and it will slip again--the problem most likely is the teeth on the jack sprocket have worn off and it will allow it to jump time slightly. Dick Maury has Done a few of these and if the problem the front cover must come off. The jack shaft sprockets evidently had a run that were not properly hardened and this shows up after age and miles.
