I just bought a 2003 X type, 2.5L with 23K miles on it. The back up sensor works now and then, more then then now. I tested it by putting the car in reverse, key in the start position and went to the back of the car. All the sensors worked as I backrd away from the car they started beeping I have done this test several times with the same result. My son was sitting in the drivers seat and could hear them inside the car. Also, I never get the 3 beeps the owners manual tells you, you will get if the system doesn't work. Any idea what is wrong? How close does an object have to be for the sensors to work or should they start to beep as soon as U put the car in reverse?

I would like to add some additional information to my post on reverse sensor. My son pulled his car in back of mine, I had the key turned to the start position and the shifter in reverse, The sensor detected his car and sounded. As soon as I turned the engine on and engaged reverse, the sensor did not detect his car which wasn't moved. If someone out there can help me with this I would appreciate it.
