yes it is for very fine tuning but be careful. If the replacement unit you got is good, ( "I now have control of the heat/ac"), then leave it alone.

Now make sure is not going to die on the 31st day!. So go out and drive the heck out of it.
Turn the A/C on for 20 minutes, to lubricate the a/c system, even in winter.

i have just installed the used amplifier and i now have control of the heater/ac system. there is enough room to put the amplifier just behind the knee bolster without removing the old one.. i have a question though, there is a slotted screw head on the unit it looks like this is an adjusting screw to fine tune the temp control. is it? i dont want to try it unyil i am sure and if it is than it will be good to get it right before i put it where it belongs.

a new conversion amplifier is around $190.00. Removal of the original amplifier in order to install a similar-type amplifier is a massive disassembly job, unlike the conversion amp. which requires no removal of the old.

I suggest you buy the Factory Shop & Parts Manual CD, before guessing your way through this job.

the valve is the correct one. i know this because i have had good climate control for over 2 years befor it failed. the amplifier was 125 with a 30 day return polocy. it also was checked for opperation before it was sent. i like theese guys. they treat me well. i would be interested in any conversion information i can get.

Well, where has the site been? Scott, make sure the correct valve was installed there atre two options one can open with vacuum the other can close, I believe yours should be open with vacuum, ill check tomorrow if no one else confirms. If it is in fact the amplifier I would not waste money on a "good' used one, buy the simple conversion.

i noticed that a new temp. valve has been installed. i have ordered a replacement amplifier and expecting to get it in a couple of days. i hope this works. the best value i have found is a used one from coventry west. hope this works. it is still cold in upstate new york. thanks for the help. updates to follow.scottie

Scott a common problem is the cabin temp sensor is bad or failing--it is in the facia (dash) top cover--you can find the inlet by running your hand under the lip on the passengers side--there was an upgrade if this is the problem let me know and I will forward the upgrade info.

could be the Heater Valve, and you can replace it with an aftermarket valve sold at eBay for $3.00 (see my previous post about this valve).

If not the heater valve, then it is the Amplifier (not audio amplifier but climate system amplifier).

That is one part of the climate system that fails after 20 years. A new version of this amplifier is made in Australia and sold in the states by John's Cars in Texas.

As to replacing these parts, you don't have to remove the old parts for testing purposes,
the amplifier is replaced without removing the old, all you do is disconnect the large cream-colored plug that has many wires, and connect the new amplifier to it.

This plug is located on the driver's side, behind the knee-vent upholstery panel. remove the two screws holding the plastic vent, then just pull the upholstery panel towards the gas pedal. You will see the large round plug in the spaghetti of wires.

i have a 87 xj6 and i have a heater issue. when the car is cold the heater blows warm air as it should for about 5 to 10 minutes. then it blows cold air. i have replaced the temp control rheostat,(i installed refinished wood. and found a broken wire) but it did nothing to help the problem. i am hoping not to have to get back in there again but if i do i want to have a clue as to what i am doing. could this be a vacuum issue or maybe connected to the thermostat?
