debating weather to rebiuld my 4.2 or lump the car. Does any one have and idea of rough cost for parts only to rebild my 4.2. i have never rebuild one of these engines before. I have got some prices of $5000 + for rebuilt motors ! this seems like alot to me. this would be a basic rebuild

Just completed a rebuild of the engine on a 1987 Jaguar XJ6 with a noted Jag restoration shop and I believe that $5,000 is about right. Remember, you will have costs to remove and replace the motor and perhaps other issues to deal with after you pull the motor. I chose to rebuild the transmission while the motor was out ($700). Parts are probably in the $1,000-$1,500 range with the biggest expense being labor.
