I have heard that the BW box is rather loud. Has anyone fitted their vehicle with a 5 speed?
A friend of mine in the south of france has a five speed T5 that was kitted in England. Is their a vendor here in the US that provides something similar?
Regards,
Russel

SIII Looking for 5 speed box.
Swiss member of Jag club
Just fitted the SIII with the Borg Warner
T-5. Having just done a complete engine overhaul, the V12
fairly snarls down the road. The added gear makes a world of difference.
The kit came complete with (bell housing) and the only requirement was to send the drive shaft out for cutting and balancing. Took just two days. Thanks all.

In contradiction to Mike Frank??s favourable comments in respect of Cangialosi??s 5 speed box I would refer to a seven page article written by George Parker & entitled "E-Type 5 Speed Upgrade" & available in JCNA??s library archives. This makes it clear that modifications were required & inluenced me in the purchase of Classic Jaguar 5 sppeed box.

Paul's box doesn't require modification, other than to adjust the length of the driveshaft. This is a simple matter that can be handled by a local shop for a few dollars. Very early versions required an electronic speedometer, but he's supported standard cable driven speedos for at least the past six years. Paul's T5 conversions have been and continue to be the market leaders, not only innovating the T5 swap itself, but providing unique gearing options. This includes a unique rally clutchless version, which is ideal for road racing. I suspect that the European T5 mod mentioned in the original post was either supplied through Medtronics or one of the vendors that's copied Paul's design. Most of the US vendors who handle T5 conversions are reselling the Medronics box.
I have had a Medtronics T5 box in my S2 since 2000. It's as strong today as the day it was installed. It's certainly no noiser than the Jag 4 it replaced, and much quieter than the earlier Moss box. It runs much cooler, which is an added benefit.

Entirely right. My statement is just my opinion, based on what I have read and heard.
The bottom line is buy what you like and enjoy. I truth you would probably be satisfied with any of them.

I think the problem with Paul Cangialosi??s box is that it has to be modified which, of course, is expensive. Certainly when I compared the two systems in 2004 the propshaft & speedo of Paul??s box had to be modifified & that put me of it. The Classic Jaguar box, as indicated, required no modification.
The claim that Cangialosi is the market leader is simply anecdotal & I have seen no evidence to support this comment.

Classic Jaguar does sell a kit, as does XK's Unlimited, but I believe the acknowledged leader in the industry is Paul Cangialosi. Check 5speeds.com In fact I think XK's is simply reselling Paul's product.
You might also check the e-type forum in jag-lovers.org for extensive debates and discussions comparing the relative merits of the various vendors.

SIII Looking for 5 speed box.
Hi Russel
I obtained a 5 speed from XK Unlimited iwww.xksunlimited.com for my '74 XKE. The gearbox took a while but once it was installed it was worth the wait.

SIII Looking for 5 speed box.
In March 2004 I installed a 5 Speed Box from Classic Jaguar of Houston, Texas in my Series 2 Roadster which has subsequently completed about 8000 miles without any problems (famous last words!). The box is based on the T5 & required no modifications. Engine RPM has reduced by about 20% & with it oil & gas consumption. However the car is not quieter, probably because the bellhousing is alloy as against the old iron. However the car is lighter as a result, which is another reason for the improved oil & gas consumption.
I very much liked the service that I got from the owner of the shop (Dan Mooney) & since I live in Germany but had the box shipped to the UK I suspect I was??nt the easiest of customers.
Incidently he has boxes for the Series 1, 2 and 3 cars- Roadsters & FHC??s

After many years in the E-Type community, it is true that Paul's JT5 *is* considered the best. There are a lot of reasons for that conclusion. I personally wouldn't base such a large purchase on one club article involving one installation, and would dig further and talk to Paul C. himself. Paul has always been willing and able to answer concerns and questions, and does so with frequency due to the confusion surrounding this subject.
Anyway, it's simple to check the archives at www.jag-lovers.org E-Type Forum for in-depth technical discussions on this very topic, and then talk to the vendors and people who have done the conversion, and decide for yourselves. I am fairly certain that Mr. Fearcey of the UK has not spoken to any of these persons himself. I say all of this without hesitation, as they are ALL true friends of mine, and I see them (George, Gary & Paul) frequently in Florida.
While one could be satisfied with either, I would not hesitate to highly recommend Paul's JT5 after so many of my E-Type friends have been successful with it. I'll bet George and Gary would buy another in a heartbeat - why not ask them? I also consider myself a friend of Dan Mooney's, having known him for over 7 years, listening to his advice when I first got my V12, and having met him at the Daytona track with Paul C. and some racing E-Types back before CJ started building their own 5-speed. Our respect for each other is mutual, and there used to be an enlightening page of history on this 5-speed topic at the CJ website.
If one is truly interested, several success stories are easily found from people with the JT5 installed in their E-Types, including two highly respected expert shops of here in Florida who repeatedly use the JT5. There are a LOT of happy customers in the E-Type circles in North America, and this topic is frequently discussed amongst us.
I would love to have one of Paul's JT5s myself, and will some day!
