Hi,
I'm new to this forum and new to Jaguar.
I have a 1979 XJ6L Series 2.
I do have a quibble that might be ascribed to my lack of knowledge.
People on this site seem to assume that when they say Series 2 or Series 3 or whatever that people reading their post will know which type of car they are referencing.
Why is this so common? Effective communication requires clarity.
Thanks,
Duncan

The initial comments maybe particularly relevant for technical inquries. I remember a mechanic recommending that I correct a vaccum advance which was never in my particular model year.

The comments about clarity regaridng your model would be partricularly relevant for technical inquries. I remember a mechanic once recommending I correct a vaccum advance which was never in my car.
XJS and XK8 could have been called Series I, II etc but it just never happened.

"Just wondering why this is?"
No reason :-)
"If I just say S2 it could mean something else."
Ok, now I see what you are driving at. The fact is, if there isn't enough context in the discussion to make the determination, even an experienced Jag guy will suffer the same confusion.

I said in the first email "effective communication requires clarity".
So since I wasn't very clear :>} I will rephrase.
This site covers all things Jaguar, not just XJ6's. However, it seems to me that I can be reading an odd bit of information about their Series 3 and I'm thinking that it is an XJ6 from 1979 through 1983 or whatever, but in actual fact they are referring to an E-Type or other model.
Maybe when one acquires a Jaguar the gleam of the wood and the smell of the leather causes one to assume that the reader will automatically know which model one owns.
I have a 1979 Series 2 XJ6 4.2L. People may wonder if it is manual or auto and does it have air, but will probably assume it is an a/c auto, but everyone who's interested will know what model Jaguar and engine is being referenced. If I just say S2 it could mean something else.
Just wondering why this is?

well... mentioning the year is equally imprecise since most people dont' always know when a model was changed... using the series is easier.
there is a detailed model guide for the XJ saloon here on the site, go to the tehc library,

If anyone doesn't understand the model desigations all they have to do is speak up ! Many here would be happy to explain. :-)
Unless told otherwise it is assumed the reader knows, I guess.

As long as it's not just me that is regularly confused. This senior thing is a serious blight on my daily life and I like to be reassured from time to time that my confusion is not peculiar to me but other people suffer from similar afflictions due to lack of information.
