I'm in the process of acquiring the Jag I have prematurely listed as cars owned. I would like to get a copy of the build sheet. If anyone can give me the short version of AN IDIOTS GUIDE TO ACQUIRING A BUILD SHEET, it would be much appreciated. Who to contact, what it would cost, etc. I would like to verify the numbers found on the vehicles data tag. This is not a numbers matching vehicle, wish is was, but it's not. It is a 4.2 engine. The number on the engine is located on the driver's side rear near the trans bell housing and starts with 7L instead of 7E which indicates it is probably from a XJ6. At some point in the cars life, someone (other than the person I'm buying it from) changed the data plate to reflect the refitted engine which puts a question in my mind regarding the other numbers.
I don't know if I can accomplish it or not but I would like to trace ownership in order to find out the history of the car, what happened to the original engine, etc. Any suggestions here would be helpful.
I would also like to find out the actual year of the replacement engine and what vehicle it was originally put in. Is this possible? Can this be accomplished via the same means used to acquire the build sheet info?

George, Thanks for the feedback. I went to the Library and copied the form. My only disappointment was their statement of "not supplying serial numbers of original drivetrain components". I already know my engine number isn't correct. I think I understand their reasoning, I was just wanting to know what the correct one was. I may contact them directly and plead my case. Once I get the Jag in my hot little hands I plan on joining JCNA as a member at large since there are no clubs in my area. I guess West Virginia ISN'T the sports car mecca of the world :)

On THIS web site go to library and follow the instructions. If you are a JCNA member it costs less. It is easy and if you provide all that is asked it will be complete (GIGO). As far as the replacement engine if you provide the serial number on this forum it can be located to within a month or two. As far as the history goes after it left Jaguar you should look through the car for inspection paperwork, work orders, ins. cards etc. Good luck. George Camp
