What engine number starts the better cam chain tensioners.
I have a 2000 XKR & I think most 2000 XKR's had the better engine tensioner.
Does any one know the actual engine number when the better tensioners were installed?

XKR & XK8 Cam Chain Tensioners
Stephen,
Your local Jaguar Dealer can you tell you if yours are plastic or aluminum by checking the VIN#.

XKR & XK8 Cam Chain Tensioners
the second ten tensioners started with vin# 9810210600. I believe mid 2002 cars. But check the engine build date.

That number cited by Phillip is an ENGINE number, rather than a VIN number. That engine is the first one to get the second design tensioner, but that second design only differed because a helper spring was added to the plunger to prevent a split-second rattle on startup. It was still the composite construction just like the original, and still susceptible to breakage at higher age & mileage.
Edit: That engine, by the way, would have ended up in a vehicle near the middle of the 1999 model year run.
The aluminum tensioners came later. I covered that a bit in another thread. The link is below.
As far as knowing what is in a given engine, the only certain way to know is to have documentation of the installation/replacement, or popping a cam cover off to have a look-see.
Cheers,
