I think my spark might be weak. Is there a way to test if my ignition amplifier is working properly? Coventry west quotes $198.00 so it is a little pricy to swap it on a whim.

BTW...it's for an '86 XJ6.

Thanks.

Doug

To: Doug Dwyer - Hey, Bill Williams and I are going to Silver's Auction in Puywallup on Saturday and Sunday, we should get there by 10:00 AM. Will you be going? If so, we'll look for you.

Heh heh heh. Fair enough, Greg, fair enough. I was hyperbolizing just a wee bit. :-)

You're right about this XJ-S, too. It's gonna cost me big money. Runs like a dream and yet I find little things that I simply MUST correct. I'm working up a shopping list. Tell Pete to get his pencil sharpened.....

I'm semi-retiring the Ser III XJ6 and will make this 12-cylinder beastie my regular transport instead.

Cheers

Right, just replace the module inside the amplifier. The old one probably says "990" on it, the last 3 digits of the old part number, 1875990. The new GM number is 10482820.

My apologies to Greg or anyone alse at Coventry for costing them a sale. Don't you worry about it, though, Doug. I spend enough with them for the two of us !! Everyone there has my credit card number memorized.

Good luck,

Doug

Its been a long time since I had my '85 XJ6 so I hope the others who've followed this thread will respond as a check. I think you can check out the coil, and the external coil resistor using the book or taking it to NAPA or some other place. Also check to see the engine is properly grounded to the frame. Look for a ground strap somewhere I've forgotten where. A frayed ground strap is no good. I've been known to put two ground straps on some of my LBC's. If all is good I think it has to be the amplifier thingy (sorry fellows - ignition amplifier is just too mundane). The GM module inside the amplifier is cheap and NAPA might have it or should be able to order it - the trick is to make sure you get the right module by reading the GM part number off the old one. I think the module goes - not the whole amplifier - Guys?

Good luck and keep us posted.
