Any experiences (good or bad) buying replacement bumpers? I'm considering a source on eBay from Chula Vista, California (claims to be the manufacturing source for many retailers). The pricing seems to be about the same as Barratt (example). The source lists many Jaguar replacement parts...chrome, mild steel (all kinds of parts for all the older cars)and has good eBay ratings. BUT...
My questions are about quality (and shipping). Claims triple chrome plated show quality. If anyone has actually bought a set of replacement bumpers from this source (or another) I'd like to hear from you.
I have considered replating my bumpers but they are only fair in many ways as a starting point. Thanks.

Jeff,
The rear over-riders came today. They look good; maybe even a little heavier gage than originals. Chrome quality looks good too.
Based on this experience I've decided to spring for a set of tailights. Price is much better than I could find anywhere else.

Thanks. I'll consider Martin Robey. Barratt claims to manufacture their own. If anyone has experience with Baratt or Robey bumpers, I'd like them to weigh in on fit and quality.
Any input on who does great work rechroming? Without references from JCNA members, I'm hesitant to select a shop. Where I live rechroming is all but shut down due to environmental issues, so finding a frienl with good experience with a local shop is hard to find.

Jay,
Thanks for your input. I will be continuing to gather information for a while. Yes, I would like your feedback once you get your overriders, thanks. I thought about doing the same, start with a small piece and see how it looks. I'm still hoping for feedback from someone who ordered bumpers from this source and is willing to share their experience with fit and quality.
Thanks,
Jeff

Cliff,
Can you expand on your rechroming experience? Did you need dent removal, did you get show qualify triple chrome plating? If I were to go this route, I would want it done right , by a shop with a great reputation with JCNA members and experience with E type chrome. If I'm going to do it, I want to avoid a bad experience as much as possible. If you are willing to discuss please call me 301-431-8280.
Thanks, Jeff

Well, I wouldn't be too concerned about replacing over-riders....all they have to do is fit the bumper; no big deal in that. I would replace rather than re-plate over-riders as well. However, the fit of the bumper against the body is a whole different enchilada.
Sorry if I misunderstood.

Patrick,
I think I'd be disappointed with any other response from a 2x national champ.
Oddly, the rest of bumpers front and rear are nicely "original." Not sure why just rear overriders bubbled & pitted. Serious filling/grinding needed to produce a decent surface to rechrome. Hopefully this budget solution won't look too shiny next to the rest.
I agree with you. I'd be concerned about fit-up if I was replacing everything.

FWIW, I had my original bumpers/overriders rechromed locally for about half the "new" price. Not surprisingly, they fit perfectly when reinstalled on my Driver.

Jeff,
I know merchant you are referring to. I recently ordered a set of rear overriders because price was half what I could find elsewhere. Figured I start small and get a sense for quality. Ebay reviews are positive. Would have been a project to rechrome as mine are badly pitted.
Promised delivery is 7-10 days, so if you are willing to wait I will be able to tell you exactly how they compare (gauge, fit-up, etc.) to old. Obviously the chrome could look good today and flake of in a year- such is life.
I suppose I'm probably contributing to chromium poisoning of mexican children, but no assurance I'm not if I buy from Barratt; only sure thing is price is 2x
Regards,
Jay

bumpers for E-Types
I have restored 4 triumph TR series cars and always used new sets of Harrington Stainless Steel bumpers, they fit perfect, they are much thinner
than original which means they are lighter in weight, they have an excellent finish and shine and I just bought a set for my XKE !
I am glad to say they are again perfect fit and finish, (the bolts that came with them were the wrong thread). Some people might fault these
SS bumpers because they are thinner than original, I think that is an advantage ! The other advantage is the price, they are 1/3 the price of
new steel replacements. They only come in complete car sets.

You would be much better off replating your originals as they have been fitted to to your car. If you buy new, you may find that they will fit poorly. It is my understanding that at Browns Lane (Jag factory), slight differences between body and bumpers were ground off for a perfect fit.
Personally, I wouldn't buy any bumpers except from Martin Robey in UK.

You might find a distributor here in US such as SNG Barratt.
J, How did your bumpers and lights turn out. Would you recommend this vendor?
