At the risk of having shrunk the attached image too much, I'm looking for someone who can tell me what has been found in the sump of the fuel tank (among a tablespoon of rust) of my 69 OTS.

It was found while removing the tank so the floor panel could be replaced. If this is part of the original sender mechanism, perhaps it's an early version, as the sender seems to be working now.

Thoughts welcome,

I've had the car since '99 and don't have much history on its early life in CA. My current theory is that someone forced the earlier Stant cap off the filler tube and broke the bottom off in the process.
It's been sitting in the sump for over 14 years...
Maybe?

Bob/Bill,
Thanks for the prompt responses! I'm glad to learn that it's not a part that I need to replace as the existing gas cap is fine. Makes me wonder if the PO had an issue with his cap...

Looks like someone had a non standard gas cap on the car.
I am going to guess its off of a replacement cheap locking cap that was pried off at some point.
its not part of the fuel sender. here is a pic of the original sender
