Hello
If at all possible I would like to identify an overdrive trans I have come across.It has the Laycock-DeNormanville Unit on the rear and the cover has the following number....KGN 1432.
Any help greatly appreciated!
I was told this may be a XJ6 trans.

Again, thanks for the concise information.
My "car" at this moment consists of just a shell- bumpers,front frame section,bonnet headlamps, doors etc. No drive train...no suspension(last owner was going vintage racing)
The car is 1st series, best guess is 64-66 F.H.C.
Being that this will never be a "numbers" car, do you believe I will be knocking down any value(I am a panel beater by trade,so any mods will look as if always there)
If I can run this box, what rear ratio do you recommend?
It seems with you as a contact...I have "struck oil"

It's an XJ manual overdrive box and will drop into a 2+2 of any series, or an S3 convertible. It won't fit any other E-type without value-destroying surgery to the floor/tunnel.
a) If you are converting an automatic you can use that top cover and the shifter will come out where the current auto selector is, once you cut a hole in the tunnel.
b) If you are converting a manual to MOD you'll need to swap the existing manual top onto this box to keep the existing shifter and console.
c) If you are converting an auto but want to use a manual console, you'll need the shorter top and console to go with it. I'd go for option a) unless you have located a manual console and tunnel cover already.

Here is the entire unit, I didn't receive a shifter arm, does this picture lead you to a definitive application?
I purchased a 1970 XJ6 for the 4.2. The gent that had the car passed but, his plan was to convert it to manual. I need the 4.2 for a Series 1 E-type project.
With tunnel modification, can I use this transmission?

You've struck oil! That's the 4-synchro Compact Type A transmission and it will drop straight into a LWB E-type or a Series XJ. The driveshaft doesn't even need changing and you just need a flywheel and clutch plus the brass bush in the back end of the crank. I don't recognise the flex hose bracket on top so it is presumably from a LHD car - either XJ or S-type AFAIK.
tHE DIFFERENCE IS IN SHIFT LEVER POSITION. tHE s-TYPE USES THE SHORT TOP COVER LIKE THE e-TYPE WHEREAS THE xj USES A TOP COVER WITH THE LEVER SET BACK ABOUT 1.5" ON A SHORT ALLOY EXTENSION OF THE COVER. Excuse capitals - just noticed. Too lazy to re-type at 10.20pm.

Doug, I believe Peter to be correct it looks like an early type "A" first fitted to a 1948 Standard and in the 50/60s to Jaguar, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Jensen, Bristol, although both Peter and I are Brits I would defer to his superior knowledge on this.

It sounds like the too-long Mk2 overdrive and possibly, the Moss box. If the plate says 'Compact Type A' you're golden and it's a 4-synchro box. Anything else, nope.
FWIW I have just collected two suitable transmissions this afternoon in the UK. They are sitting in the trunk of my hire car and should be in the US in a few weeks. One is likely already spoken for...

Hi Doug, not sure about the suffix, however this unit was fitted to XK140, also MK-1 and MK 2 also found in MG, Austin Healy, Triumph , and used extensively by Volvo in the day
