I just went for a high speed run about 20 miles in my 1964 E type to check performance. Ran without the air cleaners. Upon review there was an excessive amount of oil from the breather pipe along the rail and area.
Question, I have is how much should it be. What corrective action is required if any ?.

Also question 2, I am running a Petronix electronic distributor should that be compatible with a generator, or should I reinstall the B/M distributor.

The cars performance could be better, however it misses in 1st gear at high RPM and is OK in 4th gear.
The carbs are balanced equally.
The engine has never been rebuilt in 50 years and CR is 150 psi in all 6 cylinders.

Thank you in advance for the response.

Ed; Weather you have a alternator or gererator Jeff is right, however if you have a charged battery the voltage should be enough. The distrubutor dosn't use much and the fault may lie in the coil. Switch on the ingnition and check the voltage, without starting and after starting, at idle and at 2000 RPM or so, the volts should be the same as long as the battery is charged and putting out 12 volts. Poor connecters might be at fault as well....Cheers...Don

I have upgraded both my 6 and V-12's with the Electronic Ignitions. The 6 is the 45D Electronic Ignition from S-N-G Barratt. I tried Pertronix on both and both ran worse and low speed. I discussed it with Stew Jones and he suggested these as that is all he will use in his High Preformance engine. I have been down the same block, don't go any further without the upgrade!

DON ; I called Jeff at Advanced Distributor and he confirms that a generator output is dependent on RPM . The slower the less output for the Petronix which will not operate properly.
Therfore tomorrow I will reinstall the original distributor.

Good discussion

Ed; The stock unite has two inlets of 2 inches and you have 3 corbs of 2 inches , the math is simple, the baskets supply more air. The stock needles are marked UM I think and the new ones are marked UE, and they allow more fuel in. Before you do anything, check the marks on your needles and call Joe Curto at 781-762-SUSU and let him help you. He knows SU's like no one else, but have your needle type handy so he can make the proper call. The new type needles are richer and the carbs will need to be re-tuned as per the shop manuel. The whole job should take a couple of hours including polishing the domes. I haven't hooked up the breather lines to the baskets yet as I'm looking into a different system to capture the oil vapor with a recovery type filter. Had plumming problems in the house to deal with and am having the painters in next week so the E's oil will continue to fowl the roadway a bit. As long as the generator is keeping the battery charged the distributor should be getting enough voltage as your ingnition system runs off the battery not directly from the generator. hope this helps..Call Joe.........Don Hilston

Don, Thanks for your response, its quite interesting, I however did purchase 3 K&N basket air filters, because I think the stock A/C restricts air flow. I may be wrong. How did you install the crank breather in the basket filter?
The new needles what type richer/ leaner?
Your Petronix you have a alternator, I have a generator maybe it does not operate correctly.

Ed; When the engine is run without the stock air cleaners it won't run well above 3500 to 4000 RPM under a load due to lack of fuel. The stock AC is somewhat restriced and if you put it back on it should run better. If you change the stock AC for three basket type or run without any the mixture needle must be changed as the engine has more air avaleable to use. As to the oil out of the crank breather that should be routed into the stock air cleaner and not just dumped out the bottom. I changed my stock system for the three baskets and got new needles from Joe Curto and gained quit a nice jump up in power. I also have the Petronx HP dist. and headers with big bore exhaust. At Concours I'm in Driven Class and leave the bonnett closed....................Don
