I am unable to operate the heater controls from inside the car. When I push the levers in, the control cable just bends where it is not inside the outer cladding. I.E. between the levers and the adjustment clamp. I have bought new control cable, liberally greased the cable, tried different cable lengths, put a weaker spring on the heater flap, all to no avail. Same with the temp control valve. Both seem to operate by hand OK.
Any suggestions/similar experience and cures would be appreciated. Thanks

Re.: S-II Heater Controls
Crisis over. Couldn't figure where the problem was, so I pulled everything apart again to start over and found the cables were twisted and kinked between the firewall and the dash back plate. Replaced the control cables once more and everything now operates hunky-dory. Once again what seemed to be a major problem had the simplest solution. DUH!!

Allen, How old is the heater control valve.
I just replaced mine on my 70.
Its a kookie set up but works if everything is perfect.
My control valve just started leaking and was all crusty inside.
On the new repro's check the action on the new valve, make sure it moves freely out of the notch.
Also if your cable was replaced is the new one thick enough.
Trying to tweek the old valve by bending it or twisting it to move move freely will only lead to more leaks and worse.
Good Luck.

S-II Heater Controls
Alan assuming the cables are the correct ones then your heater valve and the control flap in the heater box are stuck. There is also the possibility that they are already adjusted to full throw and have no place to act. Good luck
Yeah, right. Why would I worry about this now?
