I have a front left air shock that needs replacing, I learned about the option of replacing the suspension system from Air shocks to a traditional spring shock absorber suspension, and thus eliminate any future air shock issues, can anyone opine as to which is the best way to go. I will save about $1000 by replacing the air shock now, but if and when I need to replace any other this will change.

I am torn between changing the system, but have heard that those who have done it are satisfied, please let me know your informed opinions.

Garfield, Bob and Bill,

I really appreciate your feedback, I did end up replacing the front left Air Shock with the Arnott Air shock, through our very good local dealer Barrett Motors, and I am satisfied with my decision, the ride feels great again, and it even improved the rear suspension, since I think that because of the fault it affected the overall performance.

Thank you again and I wish you all and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year,

John

I'ts cheaper to replace all 4 air shocks ($400.00 each with a core charge) with rebuilt ones with lifetime warranty. New compressors are less than $400.00. The spring conversion is more expensive than 4 air shocks and a new compressor from Arnott

These shocks fail after 7 or 8 years, the rebuilt ones last longer.

There is even a video on YouTube on how the change the shocks, about 30 min each with a helper.

I have had many discussions on this since owning my 2005 XJ8. In my opinion there are many advantages that you get with the air ride suspension that you will lose with the spring over shock option. Main reason people have changed is because of the cost of maintaining the air shocks and the amount of people who have suffered through the failure of the compressors.

Modified replacement shocks from Arnotts are very reasonably priced at something like $375 each and they carry a life time warrantee. In addition until now there was no way to repair the compressor because the parts were not available. They are now available from an Engineer in England that is producing after market seals that are required to do the job also at a reasonable price something like $60.00.

Worth noting that to preserve the life of the compressor you have to be aware of what your suspension is doing. When it develops a leak that goes neglected for a period of time it will cause the compressor to work harder than it should. This in turn will drastically shorten its life of the compressor. Running a car that takes a long time to attain the correct ride height also strains the compressor. Maintain the car correctly and you should not have a problem other than what normally comes with regular maintenance.

Addition note is that these air ride suspensions are particully sensitive to colder climates. Care should be taken to avoid over straining the compressor when it is around freezing outside and the front shocks exhibit leakage. As I said the front shocks seem to be the ones most effected. The modified Arnotts that I fitted to my car seem to have solved that problem for me.

John,
Two web sites that might help you make a decision. The first is more or less nice to know information, the second is good information and a place to shop for what ever your decision may be.
