I've been quoted $5500. as price to correct this condition by a reputable restoration shop. Is this cost fair? How necessary is the repair? Can I "live with it", assuming a sufficient degree of vigilance?

V-12 cam box leak
Depends how old you are and how long you plan to live.
A quart of oil at WalMart is about $2.50 so you would be able to afford about 2200 of them, which would last around 45 years if you lost a quart a week every week - and your undercarriage would never get rusty.
Well, the CAR'S undercarriage would never go rusty :-)
As George said, either there was a lot more work included or you are being taken for a ride.

Alexander I think there must be a lot more work than you have stated. If not run away very fast! It must be a V12 but even so that should not take more than a few hours. If your car is a 6 cyl. car April 1 has long since past!
wELL, IF HE IS TALKING ABOUT THE SANDWICH PLATE BETWEEN THE HEADS AND THE PLATES, THEN THE PRICE MAKES SENSE, THIS IS ONE OF THE SIGNS OF A CAR THAT HAS BEEN BADLY OVERHEATED. IT MEANS THE HEADS ARE WARPED, TO REMOVE THE HEADS FOR STRAIGHTENING AND TO FIX A MINOR OIL LEAK WOULD BE VERY FOOLISH, THE NORMAL OIL LEAK SPOTS ARE, THE OIL FILTER HOUSING & BY PASS VALVE; THE ACCESS PLUG ON THE FRONT RIGHT CAM COVER' & THE REAR MAIN SEAL!
