When trans is put in any gear, the noise gets loud and is spirattic, sounds like a catalytic converter when the media gets loose and rattles, but it's not the converter. Oil pump replaced by unknown mechanic several months ago, but previous owner says noise was there before oil pump replacement.
Just looking without prying, the flywheel and torque converter look secure.
Any ideas? (baffled)
Forget it folks! Found the proplem. Flexplate rivets loose. Now to find non-platinum( ha ha) flexplate used, not available new.
Thanks, Larry

To all you great guys that responded to my blog, I took the Jag to a master race car builder and he was able to TIG weld my flexplate to the ring gear, and fused all the rivets also. All is very quiet now, with no vibration or balance issues. Cost $100 and took about an hour.
I want to thank all again for your input!

You guys are so awesome! Now I have some options. I'll be checking local machine shops to find out if they can weld and balance. I'll get back with results or an order for Mr. Jenkins. Thanks!

I have an extra one from a 1982. If you're interested, just let me know. wljenkins at usa.net
I like Mr. Maury's idea of welding and rebalance but again, if you want a used one, I have one for you.

If it is cracked, go to a junk yard and find an older unit (series 2) that is solid.

Another thing that happens is the rivets get loose and it will rattle without any cracks. We used to weld them up and rebalance. Never had one come back so must have worked.

Thanks for responding so quickly guys! If it is cracked, could it be removed and repaired, as in welded? I noticed on later models the flexplate is actually welded to the ringgear. There are also "refurbished" units available that are welded, but terribly expensive, $500. up.

I agree with George, it's a cracked flex plate.

Larry all else eliminated you might have a torn flex plate.
Larry you got out as well as you could. I would however start a search for a flex plate--not a comment on the work just a bit of experience. The upside is if you get a new plate it will never be needed! Happy Thanksgiving.
