The rear carb randomly leaks fuel out of the air intake. The air filter gets soaking wet. I find gas everywhere. This happens randomly.

Today, I took apart the float bowl and everything appears to be ok. I am not an expert, so what appears to be ok to me, may not be so.

I would appreciate any insight and advise.

Thanks in advance,

RT

RAJ in the shoppe B-28 WH is for all 6 cylinder cars inc. Series 2. I think that is what you were supplied and if so the specs for the carbs are in there. You need to look in the emmissions section toward the rear of the series 2 section. ROW cars had 3 SUs. Look on page QY.s.12 where you will see the correct height is as posted above. 16.5+ or- .5mm.

My book says INVERT THE CARB. SO THAT THE FLOAT TAG CLOSES THE NEEDLE VALVE. MEASURE FROM THE FACE OF THE CARB. BODY (WITH GASKET REMOVED) TO THE TOP OF EACH FLOAT. THE CORRECT HEIGHT SHOULD BE 16.5 + OR - .5MM.

My Haynes book says the maesurement should be 0.65" + 0.02" (16.5 + 0.5mm)

Hope this helps

John, I have tried that and the floats are fine.

David Barnes - "The other thing might be a float adjustment problem."

Does anyone know how the float should be adjusted? Are there any specifications available? My shop manual that i bought from the JCNA shoppe does not show a specific adjustment.

Thanks!

My car would do the same type thing but it was the float being full of fuel a couple of times and the float needle sticking open other times. Sometimes my car would do this if sitting for a few weeks. Tapping the side of the carb with a hammer would fix it. I make sure now I at least start it up every couple of weeks and it has not stuck open in awhile. The other thing might be a float adjustment problem. Also are you able to disconnect the fuel line to the carb and blow thru the line while moving the float up and down by hand to see if it seats the float needle. Maybe the needle is not seating well and shutting off the fuel flow when the bowl fills up.

Thank you David. I should have mentioned that I have the float bowl apart and the float out. There is no fuel in the float. Could there have been something stuck in the jet?

Any other thoughts?

Sounds like maybe a leaking or stuck float. My experience is that the floats seem prone to leaking. If the float does not have any fuel in it you might want to check things with the fuel pump running and the air cleaner removed. If fuel is coming out of the carb try tapping the side of the carb with a hammer to see if it un-sticks the float needle and stops the fuel flow into the carb.
