I didn't take them apart so trying to figure it out. What goes into the plastic cam to make it turn into the cancel position?

Did you manage to figure this out? The circular shaped clamp shown as the lowest item in the picture is the key. With the column in the central position this adjustable clamp also has to be centralised (using the small screw to its left). the finger on this clamp is what disconnects the signal contact.
