Hi William.
Bob Klemmer has judged at JAGM Concours for 15 or so years so he knew that he'd be bumped for the wrong tire size. which he was.Try Coker tire part number COK579878 for the Vredestein 185x15 tires.

Robert, that wasn't very nice* Did he have his show tyres fitted?. I have checked and Vredestein do not show a 185 on their site !! Would they be shown somewhere else?

On my Series 1, I currently run GENERAL GRABBER UHP 205/70 R15 tires on 6 inch rims. They are H rated, look good and perform well. Of course, the judges always take points off.

Speaking of 6" wide wheels.......

I've seen a few E-types with the center-laced 6" wheels. IMHO they totally transform the looks of the car...for the better. I'm a bit surprised I don't see more of them, to be honest.

I'm wondering if using the center-laced wheels is a problem? If so that might explain why so few owners seem to use them

Just curious, that's all.

Sorry for the thread hijack

Cheers

It's rather hard to discribe the feeling but Doug's discription is pretty good. If your experience is anything like mine you'll most likely end up buying 6" wheels as I did and then the "feeling" will be as before with slightly heavier steering and the possibility of the tires rubbing on the bonnet near the back of the headlight area on full lock turns.

A too-narrow rim width usually results in a soggy feeling to the steering because the sidewalls are not properly supported. When the sidwalls are pinched onto a narrow wheel they tend to roll over more easily.

If the mis-match isn't too extreme there might not be an actual *problem* but you won't get the best out of the tire, either.

Yes I did, but there are many people who have the 205's and say they are no problem, Robert what did you mean by "the way the car feels" ?

Thanks everyone, I'm not sure, this is a driver not a show car and 205 70 15's are said to ride better? Hmm?

I have the original 5" wheels so will keep looking for the 185x15 Vredesteins. I guess I will need to have them shipped to me and then take them to an installer. Thanks Robert!

The original style Dunlops tires are very good but also very expensive. We put Vedesteins 185x15 on our 69 a number of years ago and are very happy with them. The 205x70 x15 has almost exactly the diameter of the 185x15 but if you're planning on putting them on the standard 5" wheel forget it as you wont like the way the car feels!

Thanks Robert. Any suggestions on good brands? It has been difficult for me to determine what tires to purchase. Some web sources say 205-70-15. Others say go with Vredestein Sprint Classics in 185-70-15. My newly purchased E-Type has very old tires that must be replaced before I can drive it any distance away from the garage.

Drew, You need 185X15 not 185x70x15 which are 1.5" smaller in diameter and besides rasing RPM's are cruise do not fill the wheel well.

William if you do not get the Dunlops then go with the Vredestein tires. Both excellent!
