Tires for a 1990 XJS

Am a big fan of Discount Tire but their web site is down this morning....will likely use them...

Check with tire rack or discount tire, I am sure they can fix the problem..also check out the various sizes that have been fitted to this car / model over the last many moons....

Sounds good to me. When I bought my XJS (this is years ago) it had MXV4s and I thought they were great. A tad slippery in the rain but not dangerously so.

The price seems good for Michelins. The last set I bought ...the "X-One" model for my XJ6.....were $120/each and that was 7-8 years ago, maybe closer to 10 years ago.

I don't think you can go wrong with that choice. I'd buy 'em personally.

Nope, at best price of $246 each they are already off my list....there are some MXV4 Michelin 225/60R 15's at $127 each that have a 620 hardness rating which relates to a decent wear life. Since my ole Big Cat is not for racing, just a neat "driver" for recreational use...thoughts on these?

I might add that the Pirelli 600 has a very low tread life rating and a set of four will be over $1000. These might be considerations depending on your pocketbook and how much you drive.

My guess, based on experience with similar Pirellis and performance tires, is that they'll last about 10,000 miles.

Perhaps others can chime in on P600 treadlife.

Of course if you use the car only for a few summer weekends each year it doesn't matter too much.

Assuming you're looking for a 235/60x15? If so, I think the Pirelli P600 is the only choice with the correct speed rating.

You might find more choices in a 225/60x15. I used that size on my XJS, as have others, with no problems.

Going to a 16" or 17" wheel will open things up considerably. You'll have umpteen choices. And there are some very nice looking 16-17" Jaguar wheels that look great on an XJS.

Or......

Forget about speed rating unless you really intend on driving that fast. You won't won't be alone in your decision. The lower-rated tires generally have a less-stiff casing, though, so your steering and cornering may suffer a bit if you're a sporty driver.

Don't compromise on load rating, though. You'll probably want a "97" or higher load rating.

I know that this is an old thread, but the topic is the same...finding V or Z rated correct tires for my 1990 XJS is turning out to be quite a project. Several sources for the right size, but none are the correct speed rating. Any suggestions?

Late to the tire party here - I have Pirelli P600 tires on my 1990 XJ-S convertible (even a new one in the boot as a spare) and am quite satisfied with them. I wanted to retain the original chromed wheels so I had the same search and results as you. About the only comment I have is that if you have urethane steering rack bushings you may sense a bit of vibration through the steering wheel at various speeds (depends on the road surface).

Thanks for the advice. I had contacted Michelin and their web site responded that they don't have a product that supports the car. I have determined that a Pirelli P600 will do the trick. I have to take the car from New Jersey to Alabama and I want to have new rubber on it. I did try tirerack.com and that is where I finally found the "right" tire.

I will let you know how the road trip goes when I get to Alabama.

I suggest searching a website like tirerack.com. They show two different sizes for the car from Jaguar for that year. I think it's much more important to have the proper rated tires for speed, than it is the brand, to achieve proper handling. I have used Pirelli over the years, but prefer Michelin.
